This morning's "TomVersation" -- a quarterly video interview with SKUSA Principle Tom Kutscher -- has made quite a few revelations, including the new SKUSA Florida winter series. The one that probably tops them all was the announcement of the new SuperNationals location, which we had uncovered the possibility of in April. Kutscher revealed that the 21st running of the perhaps the largest karting event in the world will be moved a couple blocks north to the brand new Las Vegas Convention Center Diamond Lot.
The Diamond Lot is a 26.36-acre space that was unveiled in January of this year with fresh asphalt and was built ontop of the famed Riviera Hotel and Casino, which was torn down in May of 2015. This new lot is almost twice the size of the Gold Lot, which hosted the last two events and will allow for all kinda of new innovation with the layout of the circuit. The Westgate will remain the host hotel.
The Las Vegas Strip borders the western side of the lot and the SKUSA Principle explained he is considering how he can put the track as close to that strip as possible to attract outsiders who are walking by.
"It's going to be the first time we're on the strip," Kutscher said. "So we can be the first one to say, 'hey, we brought it to the strip.' I went out last week and it's new pavement, it is -- our left hander, left hander, straightaway is going to come down by the strip."
Kutscher went on to explain some of his vision for the new location, albeit just fantasy visions at this point. "I'd love to see some advertisements, some radio stuff, get people in for $5 or nothing, put a beer garden there, let them see what we do and maybe race S1 and KZ on Satuday night. You know, something like that. That's my goal. Coming down that straightaway, you know, peolple walking down [the strip], I'm really excited. But theres's a lot of work to be done."
One other big revelation comes near the end of this segment of the interview when Kutscher describes his interest in a downtown Vegas location, describing it as "the ultimate goal." However, in his words, he hasn't had the ability to find the right people to make that happen.
"I'm always pushing, I'm always meeting, and I just seem to be shooting blanks. I haven't got the right people to get this stuff downtown. That is the ultimate goal, to go into the old downtown and do some crazy stuff."
The full interview is below. The comments about the SuperNationals began around the 30:30 mark:
SKUSA SpringNationals Discussion with Tom Kutscher
As promised, here is the long awaited interview with SKUSA, IAME USA WEST, and Evinco Tires principal Tom Kutscher. The polarizing figure lays it all out and gives a candid look at the next 6 months of national #kart racing. We realize this video will leave (in some cases) more questions than answers. We will do our best to elaborate on specifics as future details become available. We welcome all constructive input. Have a question you feel that wasn't addressed? Please comment below and we'll repeat the process at New Castle Motorsports Park for the #skusaprotour SummerNationals. #kartracing #gokart #racing #motorsportsPosted by SuperKarts!
