Tyler Maxson gains European karting experience with CRG Racing Team
Georgia resident impresses in second European event of the season.
In his second trip to Europe in as many months, American driver Tyler Maxson would compete in the Trofeo Andre Margutti this past weekend. Taking place at the famous South Garda Karting facility in Lonato del Garda, Italy, the CRG Racing Team driver continued to gain experience in both dry and wet weather competition.
Showing speed in the practice sessions with times in the top-five in his group, Maxson progressed through the heat race flight format and transferred directly to the main event. In only his second European event of the 2018 season, the CRG pilot was a top-ten driver throughout the week before the skies opened and heavy rain began to fall. With zero experience in the rain since entering the junior class, Maxson went to work on learning and gaining experience while trying to maintain his position close to the front of the field.
"I felt a lot more comfortable in my second event in Italy," explained Maxson. "There is a little bit of a language barrier but we are slowly overcoming that. The CRG guys are learning my driving style and I am learning their product. In the end, we made huge gains this past weekend and I am extremely excited and confident for the future."
Showing pace in the practice sessions leading up to qualifying, Maxson put his CRG in the front half of the field in the official timed qualifying session. With solid results in the heat races, Maxson would line up 28th in the prefinal and advance forward to finish 24th. In the main event, the American driver again made progress forward crossing the stripe in the 15th position, his best result of his 2018 European karting season.
Maxson continued, "I definitely need to get better in the wet weather driving. The other junior drivers are reallygood and though I learned more and more with each passing lap, it is weakness of mine for sure and something that I will work hard to improve on. In the dry, we were as fast as anyone and I think we can compete for podiums in the very near future."
